Terra Firma, Latin for “solid ground” is a home designed to offer a deep sense of permanence for a family of sailors. With their boat moored just metres from the doorstep, the house bridges land and sea, drawing inspiration from the mariners’ yearning for stability and their love of the ocean. Architect Luigi Rosselli revisited themes from a project he completed 35 years ago, continuing a dialogue between fluidity and groundedness.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!A highlight of the project was the installation of an oversized, fixed bay window in 15mm toughened glass, split into two panels with a 90-degree lapped corner join. This striking design not only maximised the view but also delivered a clean, uninterrupted connection to the bay.
Used extensively throughout the home, the Series 704B SlideMASTER™ system creates a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces an increasingly sought-after feature for modern living. Paired with Icon Flush Pull hardware on all sliding doors, the design achieves a cohesive and refined aesthetic.
Series 463 Architectural Double Hung Windows and Series 467 Architectural Windows are also featured in the home. Their sleek, contemporary profiles complement the home’s modern design,
while generously sized Series 400 Single Glazed CentreGLAZE™ panels usher in an abundance of natural light and create a strong visual connection to the surrounding landscape.
The installation presented several challenges, from anchoring products into rammed earth walls to managing access on a steep site. Through careful coordination and the use of a crane, these challenges were able to be overcome.
Terra Firma ultimately balances beauty and function, delivering a stunning home with a strong connection to the land while remaining deeply reflective of the sea-bound life its residents cherish.
