The latest in Architectural Window Systems Designer Notes series. Lindy Atkin and Steve Guthrie of Bark Design Architects explain the brief behind House at Sunshine Beach in Noosa, Queensland. With a playful flow between landscape and interior and a focus on the Japanese ideology of “wabi-sabi”, the end products is a timeless ode to both the ingenuity of the client and the beauty of the surrounding natural environment.

This stunning project in the seaside village of Blairgowrie in Victoria, showcases fantastic architectural windows and doors. Typically, large glazing can negatively impact on both energy requirements and fire ratings. Unfortunately it’s now become commonplace to see design preferences being compromised in order to satisfy these technical requirements. The brief for this project was to create a relaxing and modern beach house that could satisfy these requirements without compromising on design preference. “AWS ticked all the boxes” Interview with owner/ builder, Chris Blaber.

When Mat Elkan, designer of Courtyard House, Hawthorn, saw the site’s glass panels – weighing a massive 250 kilos each – being lifted in, he had what you might call ‘a moment’. “The owner didn’t want to be here when the glass was being lifted in and I think I sent her a text that said, ‘this is pretty awesome, you have to get down here!’”
